Hey guys just preparing a show to go onto tape and while looking at the tech specs for the station, they ask “Prior to any recording, there must me 20 seconds of roll up leader” before bars and tone, slate etc. Can anyone please tell me what a “roll up leader is”. Thanks

It means that tape must play for 20 seconds before signal appears. It can probably be blacked.

It’s a common practice to record atleast 30 secs of black/colorbars to any tape you plan to use. This is where most tape stretching/errors occurs so you may not want to put those precious videos on the first part of the tape ribbon.
