In the conventional world of audio mixing an audio track can be routed (and/or sent) to multiple busses.

FCPX only allows for one ‘role’ per timeline clip (which is sensible, but means they really still need bussing & the audio mixer pronto)

    Unless I’m missing something? (I often am…)

If you compound the whole project, the roles get broken out into separate audio components. You can then mix them as roles. A step in the right direction.

In version FCPX v10.3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcdFwkl8nDE (Advanced Mixing with Roles ). According to what I’m seeing in this video, you can regard roles as busses but not without the aid of compound clips.
