Rode VM
Posted by Justin L. on June 2, 2010 at 10:23 pmHey guys! My rode videomic finally arrived today and I was wondering, what should be the best settings to set the RodeVM on?
Many people said that it is suggested to set the pad switch on the -10dB. Is this true?
Is it better than 0dB?
Thanks!

June 3, 2010 at 2:58 amHello Justin and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.
It just depends on how loud the source is and how sensitive the circuit you have it plugged into is.
Too loud, use the pad. Not loud enough, take it out.]

June 3, 2010 at 5:53 pmWhen you say take it out, does it mean set the pad to 0dB?
Changing the Pad is really hard on the Videomic, that’s why I just want to put it in one level and not touch it again. And why does people say that the best pad to leave the videomic on is -10dB?
*I manually adjust my volume on my camera.
Thanks Ty!

Justin,
yes removing the pad means setting to 0 reduction. Hard on the mic? What the heck are you doing to it?
I don’t know why people say that -10 is good. maybe they all shoot in loud areas.

June 3, 2010 at 7:36 pmThank you very much Ty!
If I’m shooting indoors should I keep the deadcat on the mic? Or remove it and just keep the foam windshield on? Does it make any difference?
*btw, the pad switch on the rode videomic is inside the battery compartment. To change the pad, I still need to use a toothpick because the switch is really small!
I think that’s one thing I don’t like about the Videomic. -

if you have no objectionable wind source you don’t need the cat, inside or out. Be aware that HVAC ducts may be problematic.
I know where the switch is.
