Rode NTG-2 microphone
HI,
I just purchased a Rode NTG -2 microphone to use with my Shure FP32 mixer.When I put the mic selector switch onto phantom,and plug in the microphone,there is no sound.However,when I add the 1.5 volt battery into the microphone’s compartment it works fine(I assume,powered by the battery).Shouldn’t the phantom power of the FP32 power it ok,even without the battery in the microphone?thanks,

There is nothing in the product manual that indicates a battery is required for Phantom Power to pass from mixer channel to microphone circuitry.
I recommend calling Rode and letting them know the problem you are having. It would also be wise to eliminate variables on your end (use another condenser mic to ensure P48 works properly, try different inputs, try using a dead battery and supplying P48, etc.).

Try using a different mic cable.
It might be that the shield is disconnected on the one you are using.

I’ve seen this in a lot of electret mics. The battery is there as a conductor in this particular case. It conducts the Phantom Power from your mixer to the required circuit in the mic.
No big deal. The battery could be dead and external Phantom would still work.

Hi, I just bought NTG-2, plan to use it to pick up vocal from distance subject direct to camare mic input. After a few tests, it show the volumn from NTG-2 is relatively low campare to on camara mic. How do I increase the recording level of NTG-2. I am using canon 5dm2 dslr camara.
also, I plan to have 10 meter xlr to xlr cable, 1 meter xlr(female) to 3.5mm jack connect the mic onto camera, via a 3.3m boompole. Question: What is NTG-2 maximun Xlr cable distance to pick up good quality vocal?
Any other input is highly welcome.Thank you

If the Canon camera has record volume controls, increase them.
The cable you want is very specific. Not just any adapter will work. I’m pretty sure the camera input is stereo. The mic is mono. you need an adapter that allows for that.

Once you try that, you may find the low volume problem goes away.
