so let’s say you chop up a bunch of clips, delete stuff, shorten, so now you have a all this space between clips. instead of dragging the clips one by one so they’re all connected, is there a ripple function that will push them altogether?

Yes. In fact, the ripple button should be on the toolbar. However, it has to be done WHEN the piece is delete.

For now, you could turn on rippling, double-click a blank space, and press the delete key. Then move to the next blank space.

If you have the full version of Vegas (i.e. NOT Movie Studio), you could also run a script to eliminate all gaps.
