    Hi all,

Using AE 7.0 I’m trying to replicate the effect on the text shown below:

The pictures aren’t that helpful but the overall effect is of text projected on the surface of water with randomly sized ripples running in one direction though and breaking up the lettering. Additionally it almost looks like the distortion you’d get looking through moving piece of textured glass over the lettering (arctic texture for those of you who know what that looks like)

I’ve tried variations of every filter I can find on AE & some different displacement maps, a number of them give the ‘ripple’ warping water effect to the text but none in the above way; The above is more like the text being projected onto the surface of the water with the ripples breaking up the reflection, but most of the filters I’ve tried don’t break up the lettering, If you can imagine you more get the effect of text printed on a t-shirt, it can warp & move about but doesn’t break up.

    Any suggestions anyone?

it would be helpful to see a clip of what you are looking for… but this tutorial may be of some help. i uses two effects, wave world and caustics to distort a logo that makes it look like it is at the bottom of a pool….

it sounds like you’ve probably tried the simpler effects like turbulent displace and displacement map with fractal noise as a map. roughen edges can also do a similar distortion to turbulent displace with ‘loose’ rough settings…

Should have also added, you can view the effect I want if you have ‘The Evil Dead’ movie, the 2nd screengrab is the title screen from that movie. the first is from the menu of the AB version of that.

That’s not an effect on a font, it’s hand-drawn lettering.

If you want the distressing at the edges, pre-comp the text, set it as the Reverse Alpha for a layer of rather tight Fractal Noise. Pre-comp.

Copy your original text layer and paste it into a new comp. Now lay the fractal noise on top and set it to Alpha Matte the text

Sorry. Forgot to mention that you should blur the text after you set it to Reverse Alpha Matte. That way, the Fractal Noise “eats” into you text in the last step.

My suggestions for quick and simple solutions would be a combination of Stylize > Roughen Edges and Distort > Turbulent Displace.

There are other options that would give you more control and allow you to refine the look, but the above should give you a pretty good start.
