  • Right version for 64bit PC + the plugins…

    Hi,

Wonder if you can help with this. I have Sony Vegas 9.0 32bit with various plugins and works perfectly fine on Win7 32bit

I am getting a Win7 64bit system now with lots ram.

If I upgrade to Sony Vegas 11 64bit. Would I still be able to use the old plugins? I want to use the old plugins at all costs.

if there is going to be issues with plugins, I guess I should stick with the Begas 9.0 32bit? What difference would I see compared to the 32bit and 64bit version of Sony Vegas?

Do you know if this older 32bit Sony Vegas 9 will run okay on Win7 64bit system? Will it utilise the 8Gb ram on the 64bit Windows 7?

I am really confused here, since the main purpose of this new PC is video editing.

I wonder what problems I may have with DVD architect also?

Appreciate any advice you can give
    Rgds
    Peter.

[Jack McGee] “If I upgrade to Sony Vegas 11 64bit. Would I still be able to use the old plugins?”

No. 32-bit plug-ins will only load into the 32-bit version of Vegas.

[Jack McGee] “I want to use the old plugins at all costs.”

Then I would install Vegas Pro 11 32-bit. Going 64-bit means repurchasing everything you had before which is why many people stay on 32-bit.

You can edit and render much larger HD projects with 64-bit because it can use all of your memory. The 32-bit versions will only be able to use 2GB of memory.

[Jack McGee] “Do you know if this older 32bit Sony Vegas 9 will run okay on Win7 64bit system?”

It will probably work just fine. I believe Vegas Pro 9 supports Vista and so it should run fine on Windows 7 (which is just Vista without the bloat).

[Jack McGee] “Will it utilise the 8Gb ram on the 64bit Windows 7?”

No, 32-bit applications can only see 2GB of memory.

Most 32-bit applications will work fine on a 64-bit OS. They just run in 32-bit compatibility mode with 2GB of memory.

[Jack McGee] “I wonder what problems I may have with DVD architect also?”

DVD Archtect really hasn’t changed much with the last few releases on Vegas. It should work as well.

    John,

I really appreciate your help. I am half wondering now why I have bothered paying extra money for Win7 64bit OS and 8Gb ram. One more question. Do you think I could install both 64bit and 32bit Sony Vegas on this computer?

Then I could use 64bit for long HD projects (this going to be miniDV from HD camcorder)…and the 32bit for smaller FX files etc.

    Let me know your opinion.

    Thanks again

[Jack McGee] ” I am half wondering now why I have bothered paying extra money for Win7 64bit OS and 8Gb ram.”

Well… if you didn’t plan on updating all of your software to 64-bit then you’re not taking advantage of a 64-bit OS and more memory. Still, you can run a lot more 32-bit apps simultaneously and all future purchases should be 64-bit so you will gain the advantage over time if you’re not willing to upgrade now.

[Jack McGee] “Do you think I could install both 64bit and 32bit Sony Vegas on this computer?”

Yes, absolutely. That’s how most of us continue to use our 32-bit plug-ins that aren’t available in 64-bit when needed.

[Jack McGee] “Then I could use 64bit for long HD projects (this going to be miniDV from HD camcorder)…and the 32bit for smaller FX files etc.”

Yup! or you could use the 32-bit version to apply an FX, render it out, and place the rendered footage back in your 64-bit project. That’s how you would do it with stand-alone FX apps like After Effects so why not with Vegas 32-bit.
