Right format for UK
I am shooting some B-roll next week that will be used in several countries in Europe and in the US. The U.K. will be one of the first to use it. I’m planning to shoot 720p60 with the HVX-200. I’ll need to use it down converted to 480i in some cases and the 720p60 converts well out of my Kona LHe, so it seems a good choice in NTSC land.
Here are my questions: Would somebody using my footage for news purposes in the U.K. thank me to shoot in some other mode with this camera–due to frame rate or other considerations? What is commonly broadcast in the U.K. at this time? Is it mostly PAL, 4:3, 576i?

Hi Tom,
In most PAL regions footage for on air is shot 16×9 with 14×9 framing (hybrid shoot to protect), in some countries 16×9 with 4×3 framing shoot to protect.
A standard definition PAL frame is CCIR 601 720 x 576 (anamorphic for 16×9) or 1024 x 576 for fixed ratio file use.
60i will be easier to convert from if going through a linear standards converter, if keeping in software solutions then either. Progressive capture is rarely used for news purposes, so if that is a consideration then shoot interlace.

I did not see any mention of the Timebase- video in PAL countries is viewed at 25p/50i so shooting at 60 fps means your footage does not match directly and will be slowed down to match the default.

I assume that if I deliver NTSC, it will be standards converted to PAL in the usual manner with a hardware device–Snell & Wilcox or the like. Is HD converted in a similar way? How does a slow-down happen? I’ve never had complaints about my footage being slowed down by 17%.

Hi Tom,
For your deliverables remember that there are not many HD standards converters around in PAL countries, much easier and less problematic to offer NTSC SD to news stations. The slow down referred to I think is when NTSC footage is just dropped into an FCP Pro Res 422 project and allowed to render out. The Natress Standards converter plug in for FCP provides good results, though it is not considered by many to be “Broadcast” quality. -
I’ll probably deliver both 4:3 and anamorphic SD NTSC and let UK folk convert as needed. No access to HD VTR until later, so it won’t be an issue. Again, thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.
