I have just built a fantastic SAS Raid 6 @ 22.5 TB for $4500, sustained speed is at 735+ read and write.

15 – 1.5 TB drives in a RIAD tower enclosure RAID 6 using a Areca 1680 SAS controller on Quad G5 mac.

I need to off load a Avid Lan Share’s media so they we can reformat and rebuild the raid set, what is the best tool to do this. It is a Unity LAN Share under XP Pro.

I want to just ofline the data and not run video from it.

I don’t know the answer to your question. IF you are going to NAB, you should look at the ATTO Fibre to SATA appliances. The Areca 1680x is amazing, and your array is faster than the horrible Lan Share. Being able to use this as actual storage instead of the fibre array would be great.. Contact ATTO and tell them what you want to do.

    The Seagate 1.5TB SATA-II Drives – ST31500341AS

I have not had amy of the spin down issues I have heard about after the purchase.

the spindown occurs on Seagate 1.0 TB drives with firmware version
SN05. Unfortunately, I have seen this way too often. I am now only using Hitachi drives until I see a new firmware version printed on Seagate drives.

Surely you should always use Enterprise not Desktop drives for raids though no ?

    Simon,

Yes you should use Enterprise class drives in your RAIDS. Mostly because of the disk vibrations. Enterprise class drives vibrate less then normal desktop type of drives do. Also, there’s the factor of latency and how fast it would take them to spin.

    Just my $0.02
