Does anyone have an explanation as to why my Panasonic 24p footage has to be rendered if I use the Sequence setting “8 bit uncompressed”. If I import it into a sequence with the “RGB” setting it plays back fine (no rendering needed). The 24p footage was shot in both P and PA mode, so I did not remove the pulldown in FCP.

In the end, how does all of this figure into quality? I am mastering onto mini-DV and SD DVD, so no HD is going on here.

Because you’re putting DV material into an 8bit Uncompressed timeline. There’s a mismatch between your footage and the Sequence setting so it all has to be rendered. If you want to work in an Uncompressed timeline, then you’ll need to capture the footage in an uncompressed format either through a capture card or an external box like the AJA Io.
