    Hello,

I’ve been doing quite a lot of compositing recently using FCP 5.0.4. Previously, when I used to use Media 100 and Avid to edit I would have relied on After Effects to achieve similar results which is great. Admittedly FCP is no After Effects but it can do a lot of what I need. However, what I find when comping several layers is that when I go to render, the progress bar appears, it gets 50 percent through (though this differs) and then either stops rendering or gets a general error, despite the fact that the render is incomplete. I find myself cancelling the render and then starting it again and then cancelling etc., etc., until the thing is rendered. Trashing the prefs doesn’t seem to cure the complaint, nor does switching the render drive. Anyone got any ideas.

    Thanks in advance

[Otis F] “I go to render, the progress bar appears, it gets 50 percent through (though this differs) and then either stops rendering or gets a general error, despite the fact that the render is incomplete”

you most likely do not have enough room on the volume you are rendering too.

    what codec are you using?

This usually happens to me when using 10-bit. Especially in combination with certain Sapphire effects, or the Motion Blur turned on. The “workaround” that I have used in the past is to change Video Processing under the Sequence Settings to 8-bit. Then it will magically render.

Also be sure to do a “Render All”.

Gary you said: “you most likely do not have enough room on the volume you are rendering too”

I have plenty of room, as I said it happens even when I switch render drives.

At the moment I am using the Photo-JPEG codec as my sequence as an offline, but this has happened in 8 bit sequences as well, and I always have my video processing set to render in 8bit. The card is a Kona LH but this problem also occurred with our old Cinewave card.

    Thanks

I’ve never seen that behavior here either with my old CineWave system or our Kona 2 and now Kona 3 systems. I’ve done composites of 27 tracks and more in FCP in our old CineWave and the Kona systems and it’s rendered everything just fine here.

Do you have enough RAM in your system? General Error can often pop up when it has RAM issues. We run 3GB, 4GB and 4GB RAM in our three systems here.

    Hi Walter,

It’s a Dual 2.5GHz G5 with 4GB of Ram, so I don’t think that’s the issue, and I’m rendering to fairly fast scsi drives. Getting a tad frustrated by it now!
    Thanks
