  • Reverse computer shot – How’d they do it?

Posted by Fred Matthews on January 8, 2007 at 4:22 pm

There is a commercial that I have only seen once that I would like to try to recreate.

The primary shot is from the vantage point of the computer. So basically I am inside the computer looking out at the person sitting in front. The elements of the website are visible and active but the whiteness of the computer screen is not there. This leads me to believe that it is not just a shot of a computer monitor reversed and then made translucent.

Has anyone seen this commercial and better yet do you know how it was done? I would really like to try doing this effect.

    Thanks

I’d shoot the talent with a very wide lens and possibly light him/her with a ringlight. Then I’d make an animation of the UI graphic and layer it (flopped) over the shot footage in AE.

    Anybody else?

Haven’t seen the commercial but most likely the website has been recreated/animated in a compositing app (i.e. After Effects) and then composited and manipulated to create the desired effect.
The actual video elements (actors) most likely had some sort of guide as to where the screen would be so when the events were filmed and say if the actor poked at the screen the finger wouldn’t pass a certain depth.
I once saw some of the “making of…” videos on YouTube for the HP commercials and you can see that they had a wire frame in front of the talent (a pro snowboarder in this case) to use as a visual reference to where the screen or angle of view of the camera was and the depth at which they could push their hands forward.

The talents eyes are a concern. They do need to be looking in the direction of the active element.

The commercial used different screens with different people. One person at home on their computer another at a laptop then one at work.

I think that if I can get all the elements that our site uses and build a look alike site in AE and then flop the whole thing…it might work. Making the active elements look real would be critical.

Anyone else? I really want to give this a try.

I think Steve nailed what they did, However I don’t think it was a ring light, you would see it in their eyes. My guess is some diffused Kino tubes above and below the lens.

Yeah, I’ll buy that. Ringlights are kind of obvious, eye-wise.

Also, a lot of people see ring lights like they do Swing-tilts, green telecine look, 8mm lenses and such as a late 90’s over used thing. A client asked me to use a ring light on a girl in a MetroPCS spot and I spent a while talking him out of it 😉

I appreciate all the responses and have also gathered some help from another site. But does anyone know what company the spot is promoting?

That is similar but not the exact same one. The one I am talking about showed multiple people and you could see the keyboard. But this one certainly helps me start to get a feel for the effect.

    Thanks Chris.
