REV Pro Media for Archiving and Back-up
Hey Gang – I’m looking into the various formats and somewhat endless debate over backing up and archiving P2 and other digital, file based assets. I’ve been looking at the REV Pro media and exteral FW drive by GVG/Thompson. Has anyone else been using these drives?
I’m using (2) 16GB P2 cards for acquisition and the 35GB storage capacity of the standard Rev Pro media seems like a perfect match both in the field as well as archiving assets in post.
Curious to hear what the rest of you have to offer up on Rev Pro media as well as what else you’re using these days. I’m stuck between the expense of a tape based LTO or DLT solution, ie: Quantum LTO-3A or using my Blu-Ray drive to archive.

Rev drives are made by Iomega. I have one, a beta unit, hooked up to my old G4 for the past 3+ years and it still doesn’t work very well.
Iomega has a very bad track record with Macs, so if your PC based you might do better… And they might have “perfected” the drive…. I will not buy anything Iomega….. too dangerous…

We still import all our P2 footage and output to a DVCProHD tape. This “old fashioned” tape method has worked for as long as I’ve been in the business, and since we have seen many many hard drive and tape formats change over the years, we still have Beta SP. My guess is we will have DVCPro HD for a while as well.
But we also use 500 and 750 gig bar drives that we install in a $12 tray and use in our removable SATA bay. Fast, easily restored, searchable etc.

I’m really not interested in archiving raw footage to a tape format who’s lifespan, like most, is questionable not to mention metadata is lost once it hits the tape. I’d also like to restore one, several or all archived assets without having to search thru tape. And then there’s the obvious cost of another deck. Kinda defeats the whole tapeless workflow I’m going for. But thanks for sharing!

Nate – I appreciate the whole I-Omega issue. I had a few of those older drives for PC but never had issues. However, from my research and reviews, these REV Pro and new generation ER/XP drives have evolved from that original 25 year old technology. Thompson GV manufacture the the drives in their Infinity series and folks I’ve talked to seem to like the stability and performance. I’m only interested in the drive as a stand alone backup solution and seeing if anyone has had issues with the current REV Pro drives.
