Posted by Raymond Tarry on March 11, 2007 at 6:10 pm

Hello, I recently deleted some footage from my hard drive which was part of a completed short film. The only copy I have of the full short is on a DVD I made.
I want to post the Film on the Web. How can I copy it off the DVD disc (Sony DVD-R) in a format, avi., mov. etc. so I can post it?
    Thanks – Raymond

2 ways I could do this:

    1. Copy the VOB file(s) back to HardDrive from DVD and rename it .mpg > then use another software (e.g. AE or TMPGENC to encode it back to avi, if need to edit OR if not need to edit, use some third party free encoders like, SUPERENCODER, to transcode your MPEG2 file into .mov or .wmv. (Prefer method)

    2. If some re-encoding softwares are not available, play the DVD on a dvd player > use a DV Camcorder to bypass the signal back to Premiere for capturing (You don’t even have to capture it to tape, then re-capture again into Premiere)

    Best wish,
    Perry

    3. Use avisynth + DGMPGDec + Premiere avisynth plugin to load the MPEG directly. This will take about 2-3 hours the first time you do it because you’ll be learning about avisynth and reading documentation, but every subsequent time you do it it takes about 10 minutes to set it up. The benefit is that you never re-encode the .VOBs; they are in Premiere at full quality, always.

That sounds great, but, sometime, when I loaded MPEG into PPro, it is all screwed up (looks like aged film with interlace). Would you expand on your method? Or direct us to another location for more reading about “DGMPGDec”, I am not familiar with this codec. (I used avisynth before)

    Sincerely,
    Perry

Perry, I played the DVD on a DVD player and sent the signal into Premiere Pro via Firewire from my DVX100A, but when I tried to capture to Premiere, it just captured what was on the tape in the camcorder.
Is it possible to just capture what’s in the capture window?
    Thanks – Raymond

Capture in Record mode, but without tape in it, leave the tape door open.

Perry, I was able to capture it by removing the tape (with the door closed). It worked great! Thanks!
I really appreciate your help – Raymond
