Restoring old film now digitized, 2nd Opinion Request
I am new to APP. Recently moved from FreeBSD to Windows. Not new to editing, just new to W10 and APP.
I have an old film recently digitized. It’s full of scratches and random dust specs. Neat video is ineffective against this type of noise due to the randomness, and I did review both of their tutorial videos to ensure I was using the tool correctly.
I use two techniques:
#1: For camera caused scratches (which remains in one place throughout the film), I create another layer, them use Gaussian Blur, Create masks as small as possible for the issues, then render.
Results: Very Good, but labor intensive as you have to review the footage frame by frame, and possibly animate the HLS values throughout the footage to avoid blurring something obvious.
#2: For damaged film: Export entire sequence to a TIFF sequence, then edit the film frame by frame to remove the random locations and severity of the scratches. Then use the NLE to recreate the movie from the edited image sequence, and use the original soundtrack.
Results: Outstanding, but outrageously time intensive thus very expensive for the customer
Can someone please enlighten me if APP has a better way than the above for restoring vintage film?

Regarding budget…I am a disabled USMC Vietnam Vet living on SSDI and VA disability. Certainly not affluence. I do work for Bike Depot, and JM Studios out of Manitou Springs.
