  • Restoring My Boot Drive Final Question

Posted by Patrick Morrow on February 17, 2008 at 3:09 am

    Hello All,
I have used Carbon Copy to clone my boot drive to an external hard drive.l I now want to erase my boot drive and bring back the cloned files to my laptop. Do I have to reinstall Leopard or can I just boot off of my firewire drive to my laptop? Sorry for this ongoing thread, I just want to get this done as soon as I can.
    Many Thanks!!!

You don’t need to install Leopard. The same process you did to clone your internal disc now you have to do it to clone your external disc.

What are you trying to accomplish by cloning your boot erasing it and then just cloning everything back.

That puts you exactly back where you started.

I cannot repair permissions or get updates, so I wanted to clean ny drive, reinstall leopard and bring back all the files. I did a backup using CCC cloning software to an external firewire. Please advise
    Thanks!!!

What Zane means is that if you are cloning a System with problems, you are cloning the problems too. Only if the problems you are having comes from a lower level of your computer (ie, wrong partition scheme) is worth what you are trying.
I have being reading some threads about having problems repairing permissions. They mention the partition schemes, but in the end I haven’t understood clearly if this was the origin of the issue. Sorry I can not help you because I’m still in Tiger. But I’m concerned about because I have in mind to go to Leopard this week.

To tell for sure if the issues will be brought back if you erase and then reclone, boot from the cloned drive and see if the same issues occur there.

Chances are the issues will be there as well.

The best thing to do is to erase the drive and start from scratch on it. Install a clean OS, then all your applications run any needed updates etc. Once you are at that point it may not be a bad idea to clone it at that stage making a “Master Image” of what you typically have on your computer. That way if anythings gets messed up in the future all you need to do is back up your data files to another drive, erase and reclone from the “Master Image” thus saving you from having to do the long process of of reinstalling the OS and all the applications over again.

    Best of luck!
