  • Resolve Preconform Workflow Question

Posted by Ted Snavely on September 30, 2010 at 8:50 pm

I do a lot of work where I receive a baked quicktime from a client
and a single layer edl. I’m currently doing tests on the Resolve where I’m using the
preconform method of importing the edl (splitting the source clips
“on” in the project settings) and I’m getting my media in the master
session timeline, but wherever there is a dissolve in the edl I’m
getting overlap footage from the clips on either side,
essentially extending the total frames of the project. The timeline
above the master timeline reflects the edl, but no media is present.
How can I reconform the color-corrected split clip timeline to match
the edl that was given to me, or is there a way to get media into the
edl timeline? I haven’t been successful in getting media to appear in the edl timeline.
Has anyone experienced anything like this?
Thanks in advance for any light you can shed.

    Here are the steps:

    1. Create a new project
    2. Add the pre-conformed clip (with the dissolves baked in etc) to the media pool
    3. You probably want to have the option to “Split source clips for preconform” disabled (see more below about this option)
    4. In the conform page click on the preconform button and choose the EDL which was used to conform the clip
    5. you should see something like the example above
    6. In the color page, grade and render the edl session (not the master). This allows you to grade across the dissolves nicely without having to insert keyframes for dynamics, etc.

“Split source clips for preconform” – ON or OFF

The default and recommended option is to have this OFF. This allows you to add new versions of the pre-conformed clip easily, by removing the old one, and adding a new one. The screenshot above however was taken with this option being ON, therefore you see 2 clips in the master session.

Please note that if you get a new version of the clip with different edits (i.e. a new EDL), it would be better to create a new project, and then use colortrace to copy over the grades.

Thanks for the heads up on this issue, both of you. I’ve been asking myself “isn’t here a solution for things like this?” Resolve comes more to life every day. Can’t wait to show this feature to clients !

I’ve been doing trials with preconform for about 3 hours yesterday since most our finsihing is from flattened quicktime or MXF files. What I found was that as long as I tidy up the timeline in FCP first, everything works flawlessly as long as I export the EDL with “Generic Edits”. It was really a great discovery for me that the dissolves are handled in this fashion – it means hours of saved time if the editors has gone crazy with dissolves.

I have not seen the issue where the edit becomes longer – I’ve even synced my timeline with audio (which is a great feature after being stuck with no audio in Color for so long)

I did a few tests too, on friday. It’s almost like I want to encourage clients to deliver their projects like this. Smaller files, less to take care of, just “plug-and-play”, time and money saved.
