  • Resolve Feature Request – Bitrate Choices for H.264 Renders

Posted by Paul Korver on February 8, 2013 at 4:55 am

Anyone else want the ability to select a bitrate when encoding H.264 files out of Resolve? We typically use H.264s (a lot) for encoding web versions (ie. HD Vimeo / YouTube). To look great and also stream well they need to have bitrates between 2.5 – 6 Mbps depending on the frame size. Currently when you make and H.264 it encodes at a very very high bitrate so as to be unusable for what we view as the primary purpose of an H.264… to make nice looking streaming web or proxy media. I love all the development going on for Resolve (bravo team Blackmagic) but I think a reasonable feature request would be to enter in a target bitrate (or select from a predetermined list).

    Anyone agree?

    Page 563 of the manual.
Render settings in the “Output” section.
When you pick H264 the “Set Compression Quality” setting becomes active.
You cannot set specific bit-rates but you do a get a variety of quality choices.

Compression quality and bitrate are two different things. I’m with Paul. User selectable bitrates would be beneficial for preview/reference quicktimes, as well as web deliverables.

+1 here for this feature. Would save an extra leg of encoding to be able to dial this in on the delivery page. On a side note, we recently just had a client ask for a 4K MP4/H264 deliverable for Sony’s new online 4K streaming service. Alas we couldn’t deliver it due to the 60Mbps bit rate it called for (compressor 4 can’t even encode an H264/MP4 at that bitrate, and after a bit of looking around I couldn’t find much else that could currently). For the future H264 and eventually H265 will be a common deliverable, and it would be great if Resolve could generate these with plenty of options to boot.

Read the Manual? Psha!! 🙂 Thanks for pointing this out Eric. Will take a look but it does seem like optimizing (ability to set bitrates etc) H.264 delivery would be ideal as H.264 is likely the most common form of a file based distribution for motion content.
