I’m trying to figure out how to make Resolve conform (or preconform) a timeline with gaps instead of black using EDLs. Every time I conform an EDL with the Resolve it replaces BL with actual slug of black. I want to be able to drop one of the EDLs (V2) on top of another and have it “shine through” the gaps to the bottom layer (V1).

Another way of asking this is… How can I conform an EDL as a second layer (with gaps and transitions)?

Also, is there a way to “filter” out the black elements from a timeline and delete them all at once?

Seems to me there should be a “conform with gaps” option. Additionally, there should be a “conform with custom black” option so I can define a custom color for black (like 64 Black for LOG film conforms).

Use xml instead, but resolve is not the most convinient composing tool

XML and AAF are not an option. Not until Autodesk gets on board.

You could delete or disable the black/slug…

Resolve should be able to load an non-continuous EDL, e.g. an EDL with gaps in the middle.

Is it possible to use your Edit program to export the EDL without those BL events?

Else BL is treated as a black clip!

It’s pretty darned easy to just edit the EDL in any text editor and remove the lines with Black edits…..

Agreed. However, if you have a transition on a V2 layer, you need to transition from SOMETHING. Resolve adds a black slug, which does not reveal the layer below. This is the fundamental problem… Transitions.

If there was an easy way to select all black events (what I call filters), then I could delete them all (or disable them). Problem is there is no tool for this. You can’t expect someone to manually select all the black events and delete them. This is not a viable solution.

In addition, when a V2 transitions from a gap (i.e. black), the black slug the resolve inserts is hidden behind the transition and is impossible to select without removing the transition first.

    Possible solutions:
    1) Have a preference setting to treat BL events as gaps. Gaps would reveal either the layer below or a background color, which would be custom defined (ie. Black 0 or Black 64). This would be my preferred solution as it solves two problems at once and is very intuitive.

    2) Resolve can load or preconform EDLs and have the option to place them as a layer above (V2 or greater) another already conformed EDL. When doing so, it would treat BL events as gaps.

    3) Have the ability to “stack” EDLs. If a user stacks a series of two or more conformed EDLs, the upper layers would replace black with gaps.

    4) The resolve would recognize the REEL ID of GAP and treat it as a gap. Just as it recognizes the REEL ID of BL and treats it as black. Admittedly, this is not a very good solution.

Currently there is no documented way to build a multi-layered timeline using EDLs. Although there is a workaround.

“Not until Autodesk gets on board”

    What am I missing here?

Autodesk Smoke and Flame do not export AAF or XML. They are finishing tools, so why would you… right? Well, except when it comes to color grading. Autodesk products only export EDLs and the only other way of moving a timeline from Smoke to color is to buy a Lustre.
