Resolve – Amount of RAM
Posted by Peter Brewer on November 28, 2012 at 12:23 amThe Resolve config manual says that it runs best with 8, 16 or 24 gig of Ram installed.
If my Mac Pro has 10Gig of Ram, will I get better performance if I remove 2gig?

November 28, 2012 at 12:40 amIt depends which motherboard for specifics but its impact it more for decoding compressed images than grading speed which is more GPU based.

November 28, 2012 at 12:46 amThanks for the response Peter. I have a 2008 quad 2.8 Mac Pro. What would you suggest?
(Yes like everyone else, I’m holding out to see what apple does with the mac pro so I can update!)

November 28, 2012 at 1:20 amFrom memory, 12GB (4×2) is recommended for the 2008 as it has a quad channel memory buss.
I should also add, its less critical when using 64bit OS.

December 3, 2012 at 12:32 pmCan I ask for a little RAM advice as well?
We were thinking of upgrading but wanted to see what would be the best choice.
Our current setup is a Mac Pro 2009 with the 2 x quad core 2.26 cpu’s. We are running OSX 10.6.8 and Resolve 8 (will move to 9 at some point). I think we just run OSX in the default kernel mode (32 bit right?). Resolve is still just 32bit on OSX right?
So we currently have 6GB of ram and wanted to see if it will help to increase that amount and if so, what would be a good number. we do run into the out of memory message sometimes.
thanks so much,

December 6, 2012 at 11:40 pmThanks Peter,
We will upgrade the RAM then. Does it matter how many sticks of RAM or what size they are for best performance? Or just put as many in as we can afford? Also for our setup using Resolve 8, it wouldn’t really matter if we boot up in 32 or 64 bit right? When we move to 9 we would want to make sure we are in a 64bit OS environment right?
thanks much,
Peter
