Resolution info; making SD DVcam footage Internet-acceptable HD?

2 questions. Was wondering if there was a good online resource for explaining the various resolution levels – DV 25, DV 50, etc. – Avid MC 2.8 offers (particularly the M and S distinctions)? I am generally capturing footage at DV 25 411 but want to explore the different options. Or at least get a handle on what options are available when working from DVcam original material captured via firewire. My user manual has surprisingly little info about it.
2nd question is a bit more specific. Now that the major video hosting sites (You Tube, Blip) are offering an “HD” video quality option I was hoping to up-res my SD DVcam/Mini-DV original footage (generally a dump from Digi Beta original field masters) to meet the HD std.s and still mantain an acceptable Internet display resolution. YouTube’s standards for HD are 1280 x 720 and they suggest using the H264 Codec. So far, all the text exports i’ve done – from sequences cut with SD DVcam footage, captured Firewire at DV 25 411 – look really poor when uploaded to YT and nowhere close to the image quality of other HD-ready clips I’ve seen on YT. In fact there doesn’t seem to be much image quality difference bet/ my test “HD” exports and my previous SD exports (720 x 400, MP4.) Is there a smarter way to game this SD footage so I can squeeze out a better looking image? (I know it’s complicated by the fact that YT allows user var. display frame sizes, incl. full screen.) Perhaps bring in the footage at a different res level? (The reason why I was looking for the above info.) Or am I just limited by the fundamental SD DV25 nature of my source footage?
