Resizing a project (Follow up to John Rofrano post)
I created multiple Blu-Ray projects and then rendered each out as M2V and W64 streams, taking these into DVD Architect to create the menu based Blu-ray
Project all completed – great success.
I now want to create a DVD version as well.Some months back …In a previous post John Rofrano replied:
“PAL Widescreen and PAL HD use different aspect ratios. Assuming you set your project for PAL HD you will get black bars on the PAL Widescreen rendering unless you stretch it at render time or crop it at editing time.
I would render to Blu-ray. Then create a PAL Widescreen project and drop the Blu-ray render into that and crop it to PAL Widescreen aspect before rendering to PAL Widescreen. Just open Pan/Crop and right-click the frame and select Match Output Aspect before you render.”
Seemed a great way forward, I just tried to do this .. without success – am I missing something?
.. I created new project, set properties to PAL DVD widescreen …
Went to add media and it does not show any of my M2V files, tried another approach to drag M2V files to timeline again no go. Get the error “none of the video files could be opened”Looks like although it happily creates M2V files as an output .. it will not except them as media files.
Is there something in the instruction I’m missing ?
I have the original sub vf project files which are Blu-ray 1920×1080,25fps with the video (mpeg2) and audio (mp3) files on the timeline…. can I get to matching a DVD project some other way ? I have the DVD architect Blu-ray project (bit of a misnomer) .. is there some option there to flip it to a DVD

A thought – as the above does not seem to work … I have a possible far simpler option ………
Tried it and its seems to work – please tell me if I’m going wrong.
There are about 30 individual Movie Studio BluRay projects. Instead of changing any of them … I went into the DVDA project … and changed project properties to DVD PAL 720 x 576
Rest at default and it seems happy creating a DVD.As the quality will suffer – I’ll actually create 2 separate DVD’s .. easy to do the way menus were set up.
Is there anything wrong with this approach ?

Maybe it’s a limitation of Movie Studio? I just rendered an MPEG2 Blu-ray M2V file in Vegas Pro 13.0 and dropped it back onto the timeline and it worked without any problems.

No, as long as you are happy with the results. As I said, the aspect ratios are different so I assume you will get black bars on the PAL DVD but maybe DVD Architect will stretch the video. I don’t know I never tried it this way.

It won’t accept m2V so can’t resize anyway.
I have been trying test resizing and at no time do I get black bars … all come out happily as 16:9 aspect ratio.
Test 1 … Blu-ray project render as Bluray 1920 x 1080 … aspect ratio 16:9
Then to get DVD ver simply from same project (no change at all to anything on timeline) did Render as DVD Widescreen again aspect ratio defaults to 16:9 ….. render looks exactly the same ..(apart from quality drop) no black bars no loss of image.Test 2 at DVDA created Blu-ray disc from Blu-ray project ….. then just simply changed disc type to DVD and created DVD disc … is did all necessary conversion and again video is the same no black bars.
The input media file is 16:9 the DVD output is 16:9 the Blu_ray output is 16:9
So no need to match aspect ration .. it is all 16:9
All the concern over DVD to Blu_ray and round and square pixels seems irrelevant … it just works. Perhaps its is as media input files are 16:9
I can switch between DVD and Blu-Ray without any action at all on time line ……… perhaps Movie Studio just does what is necessary …. but whether Blu_ray or DVD end images are same shape with no loss, which is where I needed it to be.
Perhaps I have some auto convert setting or similar … but it works.Pity about being unable to take the M2V files back in though.

It seems only versions 13 of VPro and MSPlatinum are able, at least for me. You could test with the MSP 13 trial if it works for you.

It could very well be. The whole point of Movie Studio is to be simple. I’m always amazed at people who buy Movie Studio and then ask what template to render for DVD, etc… I tell them, press Make Movie and follow the prompts. It couldn’t be easier. Sometimes we try and make things harder than they really are. Glad it’s all working for you.

That could be. I only tested it with Vegas Pro 13.0.
