Looking to setup a MacMini server with an Areca ARC-8050 (8 drive) storage connected through Thunderbolt – and a SmallTree 6 port Gigabit Ethernet server card connected to the Thunderbolt chain through expansion box. The server will reshare through AFP.

Setup needs to deliver video files for 3 to 4 editing computers connected by Gigabit Ethernet directly to the SmallTree card. We edit in ProRes HQ.

Theoretically the drive should be fast enough to sustain the editing stations, and the Thunderbolt 10Gb connection fast enough for the traffic – but has anybody challenged this in the real world?

Also which drives would you recommend for the Areca Thunderbolt Raid? – Seagate constellation or Hitachi Ultrastar? – SATA or SAS?
