so, do i just use the green screen effect in FCP. I dont actually need the GREEN screen in the back do I?

Yes you do. The whole point of the green screen is that with keying tools you get rid of the green and leave only the subject, that you can put almost anywhere.
Without the screen, you can’t key out green and do this.
