  • Repositioning still images in the Program Window- Keyboard shortcuts ala After Effects?

Posted by Aaron Rosapepe on August 11, 2012 at 4:29 am

I am currently adjusting hundreds of images to fit a new 2.40 mask that I am now using over a 1920X1080 sequence. Each image must be adjusted individually.

When you highlight an image in the composition window of After Effects you can adjust the clip up and down via the arrow keys. This does not seem to work in Premiere (nor with modifiers as far as I can tell).

I am new to Premiere so hopefully I’m just missing something simple. Any keyboard shortcut that will do this so I don’t have to twirl down the motion menu for each image? If not, is there a modifier ala the ‘shift’ button in AE that will keep the image from moving left/right once I double click it in the program window and manually drag it up/down?

    Alas no such modifier.
Instead of moving the image up and down in the Program Monitor you can scrub the vertical number for Position in the Effect Controls.
If all the image have to move the same value, you can set the value for the first clip. Select first clip in timeline, ctrl+C. Select all the other clips Ctrl+Alt+V (Paste Attributes).

Thank you for the response. Much appreciated.

I have a couple thousand boards that will need to be adjusted for the new mask that has been implemented. Unfortunately each one needs to be adjusted individually per the action in the frame so not many opportunities for copy/paste.

I have been adjusting the position via the effects panel but it adds quite a bit of time when adjusting hundreds of images. Hopefully Adobe will implement the shortcut functionality from AE down the road.

Try double clicking the image itself in the program window and drag to the new position you want.

Mind you, that will only work for the top clip if you have several clips stacked.

Thanks Jim but I find it nearly impossible to move an image up/down in the program window using this method without the ‘x’ value changing as well. I have no wiggle room on the sides of the frames so this value has to stay the same. Thus the question about a modifier to allow me to constrain the movement to up/down only.

What is the best way to contact Adobe about feature requests? I am currently set to edit two feature length animatics and the constrain modifier would be a welcome addition to my tool set in Premiere. Probably not an issue for most people but perhaps Adobe will add this if the request is made.

Just in case anyone else finds themselves having to do this same type of repetitive task, I did find a little trick to help speed things up.

If you twirl down the motion tab on one image you can than copy/paste attributes to the rest of the images in your sequence. This way, every time you click on a new image the motion tab will already be open saving some of the repetitive motion involved and speeding up the workflow.
