    Hello,

I’m trying to replace a layer/footage in my timeline with another footage. I’ve been trying the following insturction from the help section but it doesn not seem to work for me.

To replace the source footage of one or more layers:

In a Timeline window, select the layer or layers to be replaced.
Hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) as you drag a footage item or composition from the Project window to either of the following places containing the selected layers: the Composition window or the Timeline window.
Release the mouse and then the keyboard key.
    ___

when i drag and drop, it just places the new layer on top of or infront of the old layer instead of replacing it. Am i missing something? I’m working on a MAC/AE6.5.

    thanks!

In the comp timeline, highlight the layer you want to replace.

In the project window, find the replacement footage. Select it and realease the mouse button. Hold down the option key and drag that footage OVER the layer to be replaced. Release! You’re done!

Still not right? Practice, practice, practice.

you need to highlight (click) the layer that you’re replacing in the timeline, then option/drag.

    yes.

i highlight the layer, than option/drag the new footage into the timeline. it give me the line either above or below the layer that i have highlighted as if I was doing the same thing without holding down the Option key….this is really driving me crazy!

    thanks for helping though!

I just struggled with this in After Effects 6 too – it looks to be because you need to hold down the Alt key, not the command key.
