  • Replacing footage by reconnecting, but old name.

Posted by Steve Bentley on April 6, 2005 at 2:56 pm

We do a lot of revisions, where the footage is updated, versioned and then replaced in the time line using reconnect. As long as the length of the clip has not changed this works great, but the name in the timeline does not update to the new name. Getting info on the clip reveals the true name and location though. As well, depending on what method you use to media manage the project later on, FCP may or may not ask for that old name, even though it knows very well what footage is supposed to be there.
We’ve been pretty spoiled with the After Effects “option drag” to replace footage. Is there either an equivalent in FCP, or is there a way to have the pointer update properly to reveal the name and path of this new footage when you use the reconnect method (to a different name)?

    Steve,

Yes, sort of, you go to reconnect media and then check the select files manually box and you can get any file you want.

But it does not accept the new name of the “reconnected file.
And if you choose “use clip name” in the media manager, it substitutes the old file (the name that appears in the time line) and not the new one that you had reconnected to.

You might need to uncheck “matched name only” when reconnecting.

You would have to manually change the clip name in FCP to match the new filename. There’s no built-in mechanism to do this since each can be changed independently.
