Replacing bad drive with already formatted drive
I have a Raid Array set up Raid 5. I will be replacing this unit very soon. But in the meantime, I have a bad drive that needs replaced. The Array has 8 1TB drives. I happen to have a 1 TB drive available, but it’s formatted Mac OS Extended. Can I replace the bad drive with a drive that is already formatted? Should it be erased? and if so to what Format? I’ve done this before but only with new drives. I’d prefer to not have to buy a new drive. I’m only doing this to safely retrieve the data before transferring to a new Raid Array.

The process of rebuilding the RAID will format and erase the drive. FYI, just because it’s the same size does not guarantee it will work properly in your RAID set, but if you don’t expect performance, and you’re just temporarily rebuilding the set to get your files off, you’ll have a better chance of success.
