Replacement video card recommendations
Guys this is a bit of a weird one, so hear me out.
I am looking to replace the video card in my home system. I’m editing home stuff only on this unit, mostly NTSC SD content. The system is an old HP Pavilion d4790y, and the original video card (a GeForce 7600, I think) is outputting a lot of junk now – lines and spots and dots.
I’ve been upgrading. OS drive is a 256GB SSD. Storage/video is a 2TB WD Black Caviar. OS is Win 8.1, with the Stardock software, so it can also look and run like Win 7. Just 4GB RAM. I think I can go to 8GB on this machine if I also load the 64-bit Windows version.
Adobe suite is CS4. Old news, I know. Most usage is Premiere Pro, some light AE work, and of course Photoshop.
I am looking at some the PNY cards with nVidia chipsets, and guessing most of the inexpensive ones will probably easily outshine the old GeForce 7600.
With these parameters in mind, what features should I care about? Will CUDA cores matter with my older CS4 suite? Will the CS4 suite leverage higher RAM on the card? Your thoughts are appreciated.
This is the last money on this system. The next upgrade will be a new machine. I know this one doesn’t owe me a thing; it only edits older SD personal stuff.
