Replacement disk for promos Pegasus R4
Posted by Mick Ruane on January 4, 2019 at 1:11 pmI have an old Promise Pegasus R4, 4 X 2tb drives. I think I bought it in 2011. Still does the job.
The current drives in the raid are Hitachi HUA723020ALA641. One of the disks has gone down.
I know you need to replace it with the same drive but can I replace it with a Hitachi HUA723020ALA640? Basically is there any difference between the Hitachi HUA723020ALA641 and the Hitachi HUA723020ALA640 disks?
Thanks
Mick

January 4, 2019 at 5:02 pmYour best bet would be to replace ALL drives – when one fails it typically indicates the others in the RAID set won’t be far behind.

January 4, 2019 at 6:01 pmIdeally I would like to change all four but don’t have the finances to do so at the moment.
Do you know if a Hitachi HUA723020ALA640 will work with there other Hitachi HUA723020ALA641?

If you can you afford to lose all your data then go ahead and replace just that one drive. You might get lucky, or yiu might lose all your data. ????
Do you floss all your teeth, or just the ones you chew with? ????

January 4, 2019 at 10:10 pmI back up all my footage onto USB hard drives so even if the raid fails I wont lose anything.
Do you or anyone else know if the two drives, Hitachi HUA723020ALA641 and Hitachi HUA723020ALA640 are compatible in a Pegasus R4 raid?

January 13, 2019 at 3:34 pmHi Mick,
first of all back up your data, because you’re on Raid0 level now with you Pegasus R4.
All the drives are older than 5 years, so it is very likely that you get another drive failure in the nearest future.
if you want a reliable raid system, you should swap all drives plus one drive as a spare (all 5 drives must be exactly the same drives within the specs of your Pegasus R4. You find the possible drives in the promise compatibility list. I wouldn’t use drives, which are not on this list. Phone Promise and ask them, because your R4 is a little old.
My guess is, that the max. drive capacity is 2TB drives. You won’t get these drives any longer. You should definitely think about a new Raid. You Raid is dying.
Trying one different drive working together with your 3 existing drives is experimental. It might work for some time, it might not. It will be a non reliable raid – the worst case – then better no Raid.
CheersRainer
