  • Replaced source media with widescreen version; Now doesn’t register in vegas!

I have a huge project I’ve been working on, lots of splits and such all over the place with several .mp4 files, and suddenly decided I’d like to replace my source 4:3 footage with better quality 16:9. Originally it was an accident that I realized too late that my original encodes were in 4:3 instead of 16:9, so I later re-encoded from the same source DVDs and got widescreen files to use, hoping to simply replace the .mp4 source files with the new ones and Vegas shouldn’t complain. SHOULDN’T anyway, but it sure as &@$% does!

When I do this, Vegas no longer recognizes the files and all my precious media splits/clips get replaced by “media offline”. Painstakingly retracing all the splits and merges and speedups and slowdowns etc manually by hand is out of the question. It would take weeks, and a person shouldn’t have to anyway, it’s the same footage just in widescreen, so why the fuss Vegas?! Seriously 🙁

This is just silly. The new widescreen media is EXACTLY the same as the original 4:3 media, just re-encoded as 16:9 instead. All the timestamps would point to the same locations.

So why is Vegas not recognizing them!

I can import the new 16:9 as its own track fine, so yes Vegas can read it. It just can’t seem to SWAP this new source file with the old one!

I’ve tried using the “Replace” (says it “replaces the selected media and all its project instances with another media file”), and that changes nothing 🙁 It’s still “Media Offline”. Sigh. I’ll become a shut-in if I have to redo this whole entire project from scratch just to get the widescreen version…

Using a combo of MKVtoolnix, Yamb and MP4Cam2AVI I eventually managed to stuff the H.264 video stream in an .avi file (didn’t even think that was supposed to be possible), selected the correct aspect ratio in the Project Media window, and THEN used the “Replace” option. Now Vegas can load the new improved 16:9 media without mistaking them for being broken.
