  • Replace selected clips—Schizophrenic behavior DVR 18.6

Posted by Karl Buhl on August 12, 2024 at 2:09 am

I have several previous projects where the sources are .AVI files. I have been updating the old .AVI files with video upscaled in Topaz Photo AI.

Following the same procedure consistently, I am seeing different results in DVR 18.6 when replacing selected clips. Questioning if anyone can identify what the problem is.

    1. Open previous project in DVR 18.6.
    2. Click on Media tab.
    3. Right-click on existing .AVI file and then select ‘Replace Selected Clip’ in in the pop-up menu (selecting the newer upscaled .MP4 file).
    4. Normal behavior is that the new .MP4 file replaces the .AVI file—both in the Media tab and the Edit tab (respecting all existing edits). All good so far.

    However, frequently the following occurs:

After right-clicking on the existing .AVI file (see step #3 above) …

    > The Clip Name still shows the .AVI file.
    > Format still indicates ‘QuickTime.’
    > However, Resolution has changed from .AVI resolution (720 x 480) to 1920 x 1080 from the .MP4 file.
    > The file path (in the Media tab) points to the new .MP4 file.

Attempting to re-replace the .AVI file with the .MP4 file is an exercise in futility.

Consequently, I don’t know if the clip has been replaced or not, because the key column headers in the Media tab table are, as I said in the title, schizophrenic. Some of the table data has been replaced; some has not.

If this is a software bug, I’m not sure what’s triggering correct behavior vs. incorrect behavior.

Any ideas or suggestions to ensure consistent functionality?

    Thank you.

The Topaz files should have an added suffix. I replace the clips in the timeline by selecting the Topaz version in the media pool then right click on the matching old clip in the timeline and then selecting Conform lock with selected clip in media pool. This should mean the clip in the timeline will also show the correct new file name. I’m not sure where abouts you are doing your replace method but I’ve never had an issue doing it this way.

Your method does work to solve my problem. (I have never used ‘conform lock’ previously.) My only regret here is that it appears I can’t select and conform-lock multiple clips simultaneously … I need to work through the timeline clip-by-clip.

Fantastic, however, that you have provided a solution.

    Thank you,

You have a few other options that may work in Resolve.

You can change the source folder for media in a bin.

You can turn off your conform lock, then reconform the entire timeline to clips from one specific bin in Resolve. (Batch reconforming all your clips at once)

You can color code all the original clips before reconform, to help you identify which clips have or have not reconformed to different media.
