Replace line/dashes in shape layer by custom shape
Posted by Karin de Vries on February 8, 2024 at 10:47 pmHello all,
My animation is a hiking route: shape layer –> trim paths –> dashes.
Is it possible to have a custom shape (i.e. little footprints) instead of the dashes? I thought the Repeater might be the solution but it is either Trim Paths or Repeater.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

February 8, 2024 at 10:55 pmI would try to use Text on a Path with a suitable dingbat font that has footsteps icons.
You can then use textanimators to reveal them along the path.
If you want to place individual layers along a path, you can use the “create Nulls from path” method, and place each layer at a different percentage along the same path, then animate thme 1 by 1, so you see that’s a lot more work than text on path.

February 10, 2024 at 2:57 pmHi Filip,
The text on a path was the solution indeed. However, the fonts I found on internet contain portrait footprints. So I used an online tool and a .png file to create my own font containing a landscape footprint.
Thanks for your help!

February 11, 2024 at 12:04 pmNice, can you share the url of the online tool ?
You could also rotate the individual characters with a text-animator.

February 11, 2024 at 5:57 pmThe tool is Calligraphr (.com). Would love to share the font but apparently I’m not allowed to by CC (tried with an other file extension but nope).
Made a text layer with a lot of footprints. Copied the path from the dashes layer to path text layer and adjusted that path with pen tool for better fitting of the footprints (and added some spaces here and there).
Applied the Typewriter effect and: done!
Thanks again for this trick!
In the attachment one of the animations.
