  • Replace a clip but keep animation and filters

So I often find myself making cool animations in FCP but I always get stumped on how to replace a clip that I have spent a long time working on with another. If you are an after effect user, you know that by highlighting the clip in the timeline, then option clicking and dragging a clip in the bin window and dragging it, releasing it on top of the highlighted clip on the timeline, you can replace the clip but keep all the keyframes and filters the original clip had…

Can you do this in FCP? Just replace the clip but keep all the tweening of the one you are replacing?

There may be many ways to do this but try putting the new clip on a track above the old one. Right mouse click the old clip and copy. Select the new clip and right click. Select paste attributes and then select the attributes you want to paste. This can include filters, distort opacity etc.

    my method is a litte diiferent . . . I
    1) copy the old clip (Option+C)
    2) Overwrite or Replace with the new clip (Replace is great when there are transitions on the clip)
    3) Paste Attributes (all or selected)

Quick ‘n’ easy – great FCP feature!

    oh go on then …

why not just copy the new clip
then select the existing one and choose Paste Attributes and just tick the “Content” checkbox

I have ALWAYS wondered what the "content" box was for and just never bothered to try it. This will be a huge epiphany if it works like you've described. Thanks for pointing out an elegant and simple solution. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
