  • Repeated crash on .jpg import

Posted by Joe Marler on December 14, 2010 at 3:18 pm

Using CatDV 8.1.10 on Windows 7 64-bit, I have repeated crashes (app hangs, Java out of memory errors) trying to import a directory of 300 AVI files, 160 WMV files and 55 MOV files comprising a total of 280GB space.

I then tried to import a smaller directory of 8 AVI files and 1378 .jpg stills, comprising a total of 70GB. CatDV still crashed on import every time.

I then removed the AVI files and just tried to import 1378 .jpg stills, and it still crashed.

I then changed the CatDV list view to “concise” which uses less memory, and Tools | Preferences | Previews & Thumbnails to “small”, tried to import 1378 .jpg stills, and it still crashed.

I then deleted any .jpg file over 5MB size, leaving 1195 total files comprising 3GB total space, and it still crashed.

I then installed the 64-bit Java for 64-bit IE (don’t know if CatDV can use that or not), and it still crashed.

Most frequent failure mode: Import file (not responding) dialog. Typical Java error: “java.lang.OutOfMemoryError, processed 291 of 1387 files.

Is this a known problem? Is there some workaround?

    System details:

As yes, I know that well. I complained and a fix was quickly provided: In the “Advanced Media Handling” preference uncheck “Generate full size thumbnails from file system”

I could never get more than a few hundred of our 5000+ weekly movies to import… now never a problem with that pref unchecked. I am using the Mac version but Java is Java so it should help.

Could you mail a copy of the CatDV Error Log (do Help > System Information to see the location if you’re not sure) to support@squarebox.co.uk after you get a crash so we can investigate? It could be a corrupt file, or maybe some other issue, but it’s difficult to know for sure without more information.

Errorlog file sent. Further testing shows problem is isolated to importing .jpg images; importing 200GB of AVI files (inc’l scene detection and thumbnail generation) works OK.

However importing a directory of about 1100 .jpg images crashes every time. I don’t think it’s corruption in the data, as other folders of different images still causes the crash.

Problem seems related to .jpg thumbnail generation. Doesn’t happen if Tools | Preferences | Previews & Thumbnails is set to “no automatic generation”.

However attempting to build the thumbnails after the import by selecting Media | Build Thumbnails still causes the crash.

On CatDV ver 8.1.10 for Windows, I don’t see an option under “Advanced Media Handling” to uncheck “Generate full size thumbnails from file system”. That may be for Mac only or a prior version.
