repairing broken timecode?
i have some tapes that need timecode repair. can anyone point
me to a guide for doing so with a hvr-z1u? we also have a deck,
also a sony. tapes are hdv. some are 29.97, some 25 (50i). is
it possible to do this by plugging the camera and deck together
directly? or do we need the computer between them?thanks,

You can’t “repair” TC but; you could dub the tapes with unbroken TC. This will have no relationship to the original tapes but it “repairs” TC breaks. Best thing to do is to make sure you don’t create TC breaks when shooting. N

thanks scott. no choice with these tapes. somebody else shot them
and they seem to have their shooting habits well ingrained. what i
was wondering about was the dubbing method. tried one pass from the
camera to a fresh tape on the deck but there were glitches on the
copy when it got to the breaks. was wondering if i need to use pre-
blacked tapes to make the dub. or if i missed a setting on the deck
or camera. did i have the tape ‘cloned,’ breaks and all, when i
should have had the recording deck in another mode to continuously
lay fresh code?thanks again,

What is the FORMAT?
DV BetaSP DigiBeta?
If its DV you should be making the dub via FireWire.
There should be no actual “glitches” at the break-points (you’ll SEE the break, but the TC and actual video/audio on the dub should be fine. Make sure the deck is set to INTERNAL TC.
It its an ANALOG tape, you’ll probably have some tearing at the breaks.
Pre-blacking the new tape and recording the copy as an INSERT will help.
