Renovating Old Video
Back in the early part of the century, 2002, when I knew no better, I produced a European holiday video using an early Sony Vegas version of and burnt it to DVD (FOB files). Later, when I realised that DVDs were history, I ripped the FOB files and saved them on my hard drive.
I cringe when I look at that video now – poor quality and my inane commentary – however the memory is invaluable.
I would very much like to ‘renovate/update’ the video by replacing some images, adding new titles, changing some backing music, etc. I realise I can edit my VOB file in Vegas (Pro13) by cut and paste new video etc but I find that I then have to ‘re-render’ the project and while the new material is fine, the quality of the remaining old VOB video appears to diminish significantly after rendering. I’m happy to leave most of the old VOB video as is but I don’t understand how (if indeed I can) to add newer video to the old without having to re-render the whole project.
These days, with a newer camera and (slightly) more knowledge, I generally render recent projects as .mp4 (1920×1080, 50p) for watching on my home TV.
FYI, file properties of the old VOB files are:
Hoping there’s some clarity in my ramblings, I guess my questions are:
1. Am I wasting my time trying to update this old video to include newer material using Vegas Pro?
2. If no, is there a render setting that I should use that will accommodate the ‘new’ video and not diminish the quality of the ‘old’ video?
3. If yes, should I be looking at some other simpler video editing software?
Hope someone can help.
Cheers
Bob
