So after trying just about every combination of render options I can think of, are my only options for rendering 1080p with a 5.1 audio stream AVI (which gives me monstrously huge files) or WMV (which gives me artifacting even at the highest bandwidth)?

According to the audio choices when rendering a Sony AVC/MVC MP4 or an M2ts, I have the audio choice of Dolby Digital Studio AC-3 or AAC 5.1. Yet when I try and actually render the file it stops with an error “An error occurred while creating the media file. An error occurred opening a codec.” On occasion I get an error saying that I’ve selected a template that’s incompatible with my project, even though everything looks the same to my eyes (but I can’t reproduce that right now so I can’t describe what I’m doing).

If I try and render just an AC-3 5.1 file it renders fine. Any thoughts on what my codec issue might be?
