Rendering to Quicktime 7 problem
I am delivering a half hour interview piece to a MAC user and read John’s tutorial on setting up a DNxHD template on Vegas. I did it almost exactly as described but had Vegas running whilst I downloaded the codec from the link and installed it.
I closed Vegas down and re-opened it and found that I was able to create the DNxHD template. However, after that I could not render to Quicktime 7 mov. The option came up but after I clicked on save, there was the usual flicker from the preview screen but then nothing. The render box did not open up and nothing happens.
My OS is Windows 7 64-bit and I am using Vegas 8. I know that a user has used the DNxHD codec to make mov files on Vegas 7 so I imagine Vegas 8 should not be a problem. I have Quicktime 7.26.14.10 installed.
Does John or anyone have explanation as to what may be happening and how to fix my problem?

See if there is a temp file that’s causing the problem. When Vegas Pro renders to QuickTime it creates a file with the same filename and then .tmp extension. If a render is interrupted and this file isn’t removed by Vegas, it will call all subsequent renders to fail. That’s the only thing that I can think of. Rebooting your commuter might also help in case there is a Vegas process that is stuck and holding this temp file open for some reason.

Not sure if this will help…will waiting to hear fron John or others, try to save your rendered DNxHD.mov file to a clean folder, or check to make sure there are no files in the folder you are using which have the same name.
Your Nvidia card is probably newer than mine, GTX460. I use Quicktime version 7.76.80.95, which has worked better for me than the newest version.

I have looked for the tmp file but could not find it. I renamed the file for my render but it still did not work. I also tried to render to a clean folder. I also rebooted and installed a later version of Quicktime but still had no joy (I could not find the Quicktime version suggested).

Hi George. I have an NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT card which is older than yours, I think. I could not find a copy of Quicktime 7.76.80.95 but tried installing 7.79.80.95 but I still have had no luck. An SFL file is created but that is it.

This is all ancient history but it’s coming back to me now. At some point a QuickTime update broke Vegas Pro and Sony fixed it but if you had a copy of Vegas Pro prior to that, you needed to stick with the older version of QuickTime. this may be what you are battling.
Vegas Pro 8.0 recommends Apple® QuickTime® 7.1.6. A quick Google search reveals that Apple has it on a page cleverly entitled:
I would uninstall whatever QuickTime you have and install this version and see if it fixes anything. Also make sure that you are using the latest version of Vegas Pro 8.0c Build 260 or you may be chasing bugs that Sony has already fixed.

Cheers John, I shall look at both of these suggestions. I did roll back my Quicktime once to accommodate a problem I had before that resulted in only sound being recorded but I did not roll back to the Quicktime you recommend.

Yea, the problem that you are going to have is in trying to recreate the right set of older software that Vegas Pro 8 was designed to work with back in 2007. It’s tricky to get 9 year old software to work correctly. You have to maintain other software at back-levels to remain compatible. Good luck!
