I’m rendering a music video to .MOV format.

I’m confused on the options for framerate. I shot the video on my DSLR in 24p, so in the Project Settings, should I simply choose 24 (Film). Is that correct, or should I have chosen 23.976 (IVTC)? What’s the difference?

Then, I need to render in .MOV format. I chose the 3 MBPs Video, and in the Custom Settings dialog box, I chose 24.000 (Film) as the Frame rate. For Video Format, I chose MPEG-4 Video. Is that correct, or should I have chosen another setting?

I just notice that when I play the video back in the Quicktime player, it appears somewhat pixelated during transitions and throughout the playback. I would expect it to be crystal clear and smoother. Is there some setting that I’ve set incorrectly?

Also, what is the Pixel Aspect Ratio for? I have it set to 1.000.

    Thank you.

It depends on the actual frame rate that your DSLR “really” uses because most people mean 23.976 when they use the term “24p”.

The difference is that 24 (Film) in Vegas is only for doing film transfers where you really do have 24 frames per second. 23.976 (IVTC) is the broadcast standard for doing Inverse Telecine. It’s what most cameras shoot when they say “24p” and what all movies are delivered as on video.

You should use whatever your camera shoots.

Unless you plan to print that MOV file to actual FILM I would not use that setting. I’d use 23.976.

The MPEG4 codec in QuickTime is the much older h.263. It’s not very good. You should really be using AVC/H.264 but Vegas doesn’t support that for QuickTime. Your best bet is to use Photo JPEG or Motion JPEG. If this is for archive use the Avid DNxHD codec (which is a free download). It all depends on what you plan to do with this MOV file.

[Ron Whitaker] “Also, what is the Pixel Aspect Ratio for? I have it set to 1.000.”

That’s good because QuickTime only supports 1.000.

    Thank you.

I’m using a Panasonic GH2 and the footage is AVCHD.
