Rendering to a 52inch TV
Posted by David Rodey on May 13, 2009 at 7:15 pmHello,
I shot a video for a trade show coming up. I shot in DV using a HV20. Just found out they are going to show this on the big 52 or 55inch TV. can I render to the output size of 720×480 or to a larger size? Just want to make sure when they show it, it doesn’t come out screwey.
I either will render as an avi or wmv to a DVD since they are hooking a computer up too it to run the file.
Thank you!

May 13, 2009 at 11:55 pmDavid, I’ve got a 52″ Sony Bravia at home and my (Vegas-created) DVDs look good on it.
If the computer that’s going to be used is fast enough, DV-AVI would be the preferred format.
Failing that, a high bitrate WMV should look almost as good.
I’d render out both formats and do a test before the show to see which one works without causing any problems. -

May 14, 2009 at 1:39 pmThanks Mike!
If I make a DV-AVI can I just select the NTSC DV when I render? Usually I make stuff for our website and use wmv files. Rendering to AVI is new territory for me.
Thanks again!

May 14, 2009 at 1:46 pmYou’re welcome David.
Yes, that’s the way you do it.
If it was edited in widescreen though, use the NTSC DV Widescreen template.
If not, use the NTSC DV template.
BTW, Video for Windows (*.avi) is what the Save as type box should say (but I’m sure you knew that already).
Good luck with the trade show!! -

May 14, 2009 at 8:37 pmIt looks like we have to go the .wmv route. They are running the file from the hard drive and not the DVD. I noticed that .avi files from the hard drive come out choppy.
So since it is a 52″tv, under “Image Size” when I render, do I select High Definition (1280×720).
Basically I want my video to fill up as much of the TV screen as possible. Don’t want a tiny little square in center of a large TV.
Sorry for all the questions!

May 15, 2009 at 3:01 amDavid, I just tried a 4:3 and a 16:9 clip (720 x 480) from a DVD on my 52″ set.
Other than the 4:3 not filling the screen unless I played with the display options, it looked pretty good.
I don’t know that particular camera so is the original footage HDV or SD?
If it’s only SD, I don’t think a 1280 x 720 version would look good as it would probably suffer from upsampling.
If it’s HDV, then yes, try it and see.
Since you’re going to be feeding it WMV from a computer, I’d definitely try to do some tests and see what works best. -
