Not good news. Have you tried uninstalling then reinstalling AE?
(save your preferences file somewhere first, just in case.)
Also, is Task Manager giving you any hints?

… and have you switched off any programs that run minimized, such as Norton?

No clue in task manager. I do have McAfee and SpywareXterminator running at all times of course. Do I need to go offline and close these when I render?

This time it took 6 minutes for comp 1 and 1 1/2 hours for comp 2.
