  • Rendering template for home streaming to Fire stick and Samsung TV

Posted by Jeff Bauer on February 10, 2020 at 3:02 pm

For years I have been making videos of our vacations and other events and rendering them using the Sony AVC/MVC AVCHD 1920×1080-60i template which resulted in excellent quality videos. I keep the videos on a QNAP TS 251 NAS with 8 GB of RAM and stream them through an ASUS RT-N66U router to other computers on the home network and a Samsung 7100 TV.

I recently purchased an Amazon Fire stick for use on an older TV and purchased a new Samsung 7150 UHD TV. When attempting to stream files to either of these devices the videos begin to freeze and the audio gets out of sync after about five minutes or so.

Is there another rendering template I can use that will produce the same HD quality that is compatible with the Fire stick and the new Samsung 7150 TV?

    Thanks!

Jeff, it might be that your FireStick is choking due to the bit rate. You might try lowering the bitrate. Currently, the default it 16,000bps. Try lowering it. If that doesn’t help, try another rendering format. It those don’t work, do what I did, get a media box. They have a USB port that decodes just about any format. I have a Roku Ultra and I’m very happy with it.

    Let us know what works.

    Bruce,

Thank you for the suggestion. I will try lowering the bit rate.

Regarding your Roku Ultra box do you stream content to it and does it support a wide variety of formats? Seems like I read where the video formats they support are quite limited.

Jeff, your correct, a limited number of formats, but this is what’s available.

    Video — MKV (H. 264), MP4 (H. 264), MOV (H. 264), WMV (VC-1, firmware 3.1 only)
Music — AAC, MP3, WMA, FLAC (firmware 5.3 and later), WAV (firmware 5.3 and later)
Photo — JPG, PNG, GIF (non-animated)

You can’t go wrong with the above formats. As to why you favor the Sony render engine…you might reconsider a change.

Thanks Bruce. Looks like I have some work to do in trying out some new formats. I guess I just got lazy and stuck with what worked at the time.
