Rendering Speed w/Vegas
Posted by Geoff Chandler on March 2, 2010 at 5:37 pmI do DVD production on-location at stage events and redering speed is very important to my work flow. I understand the faster the processor, the faster my rendering, but what I don’t know is if my “quad-core” is automaticlly being utilized or does the program (Vegas in this case) has to be written to maximize quad-core or 64 bit processors. I’m going to make a new computer dedicated for these jobs and want to make sure I’m not wasiting money if Vegas doesn’t even use the extra “cores.” I assume moving up to 64 bit will speed up rendering since Vegas has a 65 bit version? Thanks, Geoff

March 2, 2010 at 9:40 pmHi geoff,
I’ve just moved to Vegas 64 bit and I must say the render times are roughly one third of what they use to be. Now faster than real time and that’s with 2 pass setting. My new system is i7 12 gb ram, and Vegas has defaulted to 16 cores. Martin

March 2, 2010 at 11:16 pmAs Martin said, the Intel Core i7 with 12GB of memory is a good platform to use and Vegas will take advantage of all the cores. I would definitely use Windows 7 64-bit as your OS. If you want maximum rendering power, get a two CPU motherboard with Quad Xeon processors and 16GB of RAM. This will give you 8 cores and Vegas will use them all.

March 3, 2010 at 1:49 amHello
This is my first post here – I’m hoping you can help.
We have an i7 based machine with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and 12Gb of Ram.
We are currently running Vegas Platinum v9 (not Pro) and DVD Architect 4.5.
Performance for rendering etc doesn’t seem to be any different from when it was running on a 32 bit system.
My suspicion is that Vegas Platinum and DVD Architect 4.5 are only 32 bit applications – is that right?
When you guys refer to 64 bit Vegas – is that Vegas Pro and DVD Architect 5?
I’m hoping you can help me unleash the potential of the hardware and operating system we have!!
Thanks
Chris

March 3, 2010 at 6:21 amMy understanding (having looked through the Sony creative site) is that your software doesn’t come in 64bit. (you might want to check this out tiyself with Sony). If that is the case, then that is your problem. It’s doesn’t matter who much ram your system has, my understanding is that you will only be able to use about 4 gb instead of the 12. Hope that helps. March 3, 2010 at 6:30 amForgot to say. Vegas pro 9 comes in both 32 & 64 bit versions. Dvda 5 has just the one version ( I think ). Martin

Sounds like Vegas Pro is what I need – time to get the credit card out and visit the Sony Creative website!!
Thanks again for your time and knowledge – much appreciated!
Cheers

March 3, 2010 at 10:42 amJust a little tip – check on the price of an upgrade from the software you have, and/or getting an older version of Vegas pro and upgrading that !!!
