  • Rendering solo layers

Posted by Jack Cook on February 6, 2008 at 7:03 pm

I’m just starting to use Cinema 10.5 (upgraded from 9) and I’m getting into using the layers, which I like a lot. But, I’ve noticed that when a layer is set as solo, so I can work on only that layer’s objects, nothing renders at all. I have to go back into the Layers palette and uncheck solo in order to render. Is this the way it’s supposed to work, or is there a way to render when solo is turned on that I’m not aware of?

    thanks,
    Jack

Do you happen to have the layer’s render icon turned off? Otherwise it should render normally.

    Hi Adam,

No, the render icon for the layer is turned on. In fact all the icons are turned on, but I’m in solo mode. When I render in the editor, or in the Picture Viewer, I get nothing but black. If I turn off the solo icon, then everything renders normally.

That’s peculiar. Only thing I can think of is that your solo’d objects might have parents that have render visibility turned off. In that case they won’t render even if the parents aren’t in the solo’d layer.

Thanks, Adam. I’ll look into that. The file I’ve used layers in has a lot of complex objects, so that could be the case. I just made a new test file, and put in a bunch of objects that had parents and children, layered them, and they rendered fine in solo mode, so it seems the problem may be in the way the objects are configured. It is an existing file that I organized into layers, so I’ll check into it to see if I can find out what’s going on.

    thanks,
    Jack
