Rendering Settings Suggestions?
Hi everyone. I’m having a bit of an issue with some videos I render out. For a bit of background, I have a channel on youtube and at the end of my videos, there’s an end slate that shows other videos and has a striped background that animates, to keep it lively. However, I’ve been running into an issue where if I don’t render the video at an incredibly high bitrate, like 10,000kbps+ the background becomes extremely pixelly and distorted. Here’s an example:

This is at 4000kbps, and you can see how badly it affects the background. Now, another:

This one is much better, but it’s at a whopping 14,000kbps!
I’ll admit that I’m not very experienced in how to effectively render a video out in Vegas. I only know basic stuff, so I’m not sure if there’s an option I should be selecting so that this doesn’t happen, or is at least diminished at lower bitrates.

Is there anything I can change or a better filetype I can be outputting to? I’m trying to find a balance between video size and quality, because my internet isn’t the greatest, and uploading full 1080p videos tends to take a rather long time.

The first thing you need to realize that that “motion is the enemy of low bit-rate”. The last thing you want on a low bit-rate video is an animated background. If you want your video inserts to the be of the highest quality possible, make your background a solid color with no motion. This will use minimal bits and leave more bits for the important parts which are the videos.
Also your template makes no sense. Setting the average and maximum bit rate to the same value on a variable bit-rate template makes it a constant bit-rate. Think about it for a moment… what you said was make the average bit-rate 8Mbps and don’t go over 8Mbps. What bit-rate do you think you will get? A constant 8Mbps. It’s like saying, “pick a number between 8 and 8”. You are also wasting time using two pass since it will have absolutely no affect at all because your video is using a constant bit-rate of 8Mbps. Two-pass works best when the maximum bit-rate is greater than the average. So, for example, if you set the max to 16Mbps and the average to 8Mbps you will get the same size file, but if a frame needs more bits, it will use more (up to 16Mbps) and take some bits away from other frames that don’t need it so that overall the average will be 8Mbps. So try max 16 and average 8 with two-pass and see if it makes a difference (it should but may not if all of your video has a lot of motion and color).
Take a look at the Internet templates that come with Vegas Pro. Switch between Sony AVC and MainConcept AVC and see which one gives you better quality. Some times one works better than the other on particular footage. Try switching the profile to see if different profiles work better on your source. You might also try desaturating your colors a bit because over saturated color is also an enemy of low bit-rate and computer generated video has a tendency to have saturated colors.

Oh, I guess I should clarify that those aren’t my typical render settings. Usually I just have it set to a constant 14Mbps. I only had the variable set to 8Mbps because I was seeing how it would look at that bitrate, but Vegas didn’t offer 8Mbps as an option for constant bitrate. The only way for me to get 8 was to manually go into variable and just set both of them to 8. I have no idea what two-pass does so that was selected just to see if it helped, which it didn’t, because of what you explained.
I’ll try using the variable 8 to 16, along with your suggestions in the last paragraph, and see how that works out.
