Rendering Settings
Posted by Steven J. gilbert on February 15, 2011 at 6:36 pmI have captured a computer screen tutorial that needs to be transferred to FCP. I have recorded the screen at 800×600 to be close to the 720×480 SD resolution I need. When I render, the screen capture looks horribly blurry. What rendering settings should I use? If my work flow for screen capture needs to change as well please interject. Thanks.

What are your timeline settings?

What codec is your screen capture in?

February 15, 2011 at 6:50 pmI think that if you have the option to do your screen capture to 720×480 this would be the best approach. When you put your 600×800 file on the 720×480 time line everything would have to be rendered and most likely down scaled slightly, which Final Cut is notoriously NOT good at.
Also, once you have the screen capture at 720×480, depending on the file format you are able to capture to, I would trans code this file to ProRes 422 before editing, if it is not already. This will enable you to edit without rendering and will give you a much smoother work flow.
Hope this helps.Richard Cooper

February 15, 2011 at 7:47 pmI am using Camtasia Studio 7 for screen capture. My FCP timeline settings I am adjusting. What compression should I try using? Animation, Photo – JPEG?? Thanks.

That answers NONE of the questions I asked.
Look at the list of easy setups in FCP, pick a screen record setting that matches one.

February 15, 2011 at 10:48 pmAre you looking for the codec in Camtasia or FCP? I used an animation codec to render the timeline after import. THanks for your assistance.

BOTH you should have them match.

Like I said they match, so only use that as your time line settings if thats the codec you screen capture in.
If posible use the ProRes Codec.
