    I still confuse myself when trying the different rendering options. So back to basics.

    I recently finished editing a project that was shot at 1920×1080/60P. This project will, 1) go on a DVD and, 2) be uploaded to a file sharing site. Since the video was shot in HD it will be rendered to different file types and sizes. Here are the questions;
    For DVD rendered as MPEG-2, what happens when 60P is converted to 30fps? What are the best settings to get the best playback quality?
    For “uploading” rendered as MP-4; again what are the best settings? Because the file is uploaded there is a tradeoff between file size and upload time vs quality.
    What are the difference between Sony/AVC and Main Concept when choosing which one to render HD with?

    The 60 frames may get blended into 30 frames and look a mess. You may have to right-click on each and every event and select Disable Resample to get Vegas to stop doing this or you can purchase a plug-in like Property Assistant for $9.95USD which will do this for you in one click.

    With Vegas Pro 10.0 you want to use the Sony AVC encoder with one of the Internet HD … templates. For Vegas Pro 11.0 or greater you want to use the MainConcept AVC encoder with one of the Internet HD … templates.

    [Brad White] “What are the difference between Sony/AVC and Main Concept when choosing which one to render HD with?”

    They are both AVC encoders with different options, the main one being that MainConcept can create files ready for internet streaming while Sony cannot.

    In General, you should use Sony AVC for Blu-ray delivery and MainConcept AVC for internet delivery except in your case with Vegas Pro 10.0 which still uses Sony AVC for Internet delivery. You would have to make your own templates if you wanted to use MainConcept AVC for internet delivery with Vegas Pro 10.0 and earlier.

    Thanks for the useful information John, especially the differences in Pro 10 and Pro 11.
    I have been “tweaking” the various settings in Vegas, rendering short test clips with different templates, buring test DVD’s, then playing on various HD TV’s to see the different affects.

    That’s a good way to learn what works and what doesn’t. One thing to also take note of are the DVD players features. All of my DVD and Blu-ray players have upscalers in them so they increase the resolution of SD to HD right in the hardware. Your DVD’s may look a lot better on these players than they would on older players that don’t have this feature. So some customers may not be as impressed with a DVD on their HD TV as others. 😉
