Hi, just got myself Final Cut Pro 5 after using adobe premiere pro for a couple years, bought the production box set and i’ve decided to go through the dvd’s it came with.

I’m having two problems, the first should be rather simple to answer, are the mov files that come with the dvd which you copy to your HD which you use to make the movie with the dvd’s instructions in NTSC or PAL? Im in new zealand you know we usually use pal, but when i wanted the introduction to the dvd it said disregard all PAL references and do everything in NTSC as thats what they are all shipped with. However, whenever i start to follow the instructions on the DVD, and i drag the first clip down onto the time line it is unrenderd. Now for me this usually means there is one main thing wrong, back in premiere, if this happened, it ment the the project settings weren’t set right to the film setting, eg: The project was setup for NTSC but the film files were PAL.

I’ve gone and tried making the project with both hte NTSC and PAL settings, but BOTH want me to render when i drag the first clip in. If you’ve watched the DVD you will see that they do not have to do this. So im wondering if this is a setting somewhere.

The second problem im having is when i click on Effects – Video Transitions, and then close a transition, they are all whited out, and i cannot click on any of them. I can however click on the Effects tab in the browser window and select the transition from there and drag it down to my clip. However, i would rather beable to do it through the menu.

FCP5 also wants me to render the transition once i’ve dragged it to the clip, but with all effects, this is usual im sure.

So sorry for the rant, but hopefully someone can help me.

OH and im running a Imac G5 17 inch, the newest version, 2.0 160 gig blah blah blah with 2 gigs of ram, so this is probably a factor aswell.

    Thanks in advance,

    Joe

    Question one:
are the mov files that come with the dvd which you copy to your HD which you use to make the movie with the dvd’s instructions in NTSC or PAL?

Which .mov files? Is this the tutorial your talking about?

    Question two:
when i click on Effects – Video Transitions, and then close a transition, they are all whited out, and i cannot click on any of them. I can however click on the Effects tab in the browser window and select the transition from there and drag it down to my clip.

If you want to use the pull down menus, select the transition area, (right at the point the two clips meet) and then go to the pull down menu for transitions.

    Hope this helps-

Well if it has to render then the media your putting into the timeline is not native. (a given) Get info on that piece of media and find out what your dealing with. Then set up your timeline to work with that media. Your browser gives all the info you need on each clip to set up your timeline. I have a feeling that your media is not what you think it is.

    Hope this helps-

ahh.. duh joe, just scroll along, and look, there it is, frame rate, 29.97 fps, okey so its definately NTSC. So im guessing i should be working in the DV-NTSC Anamorphic, why anamorphic? said so at the beginning of the DVD.. i’ll go back and give it another try this evening. Thanks for the help.

    Hi Joe,
I may be wrong, but the Apple tut files are often in a tighter codec than the real projects. If you are loading into a new project that you’ve guessed settings for, you’ll see the render bar.
Stay with the project file that comes with the tut, the T-L settings will match the media.
    Cheers
