I have completed a project (Vegas7) that is around 15 minutes long. I tried rendering the video last night, but I woke up to an error message (just generic, no details) half-way through.

I first thought I might have a problem when the render time was around 6 hours. So I am wondering: what is the best and most time efficient way to render this project?

The project itself, while small, has a lot of effects in it. There are also a lot of pictures in it. Some are very large. (Vegas was slowing down when I was working with these large pictures, so I actually had to replace it with a blank smaller picture until I was done).

My computer has 1 GB of Memory. I have increased the virtual memory a lot. I have never encountered anything like this before. Though none of my long projects in the past have had this many effects, and large pictures.

Right now I am rendering the project to an AVI file. I’m not sure if this will work. What are some other options? Would the “Render to New Track” tool help? Also, would printing to tape be more efficient? Any suggestions on how I could get this project rendered sometime today, would be greatly appreciated.

Large pictures *could* be the culprit. You might try lowering their resolution some (not enough to change the quality of the video but enough to reduce their size).

You might also try lowering the Dynamic Ram setting in the Preferences.

Another possibility would be to pre-render smaller sections before doing the final render.

    Thanks for the quick response.

I’ll try and see if changing the size of the picture would make me redo the event pan/crop keyframes.

If I printed to tape, would the computer automatically render smaller sections? And if I did pre-render parts of the project, would a render use the pre-rendered portions?

    Thanks,

    Michael

If you’re printing to tape and pre-render to DV-AVI then, yes, the pre-renders will be used.

[jeditdv] “You might also try lowering the Dynamic Ram setting in the Preferences.”

Could you tell me what this should be at ? I have mine set to 512 should I reduce it or increase it ???
    Thanks Laura

If you’re doing a lot of ram previews, you need it big enough for the length of time you are previewing. For rendering, it can be very small. I wouldn’t necessarily change it unless you were having problems of some sort.
